The Company’s founding brothers, André and Edouard Michelin, had developed the first detachable pneumatic tyre - first for bicycles and then cars, but initially only a few tyres were sold. This was caused by a combination of two factors; there were few cars on the roads, and those that were did not travel very far. Faced with this challenge, the brothers had one of the first truly brilliant marketing ideas – a Guide that would promote travel. They started producing maps and guides, to equip the motorist with essential information, designed to encourage them to venture further afield. The question of where to dine was also important, so the location of restaurants and hotels was added to give motorists even more reason to travel. The Guide encapsulated the very essence of Michelin; innovative, enhancing mobility and an essential source of assistance to motorists, as well as being a unique marketing approach. This is parallel to the values of Michelin today.
