By the third act, however, “Elysium†sacrifices the physical and political intimacies of its future world in lieu of a wearily familiar race against time. There’s much loose plotting to tie up and coat with glossy sentiment. Somewhere in the clutter is a great sci-fi yarn in the vein of “Blade Runner,†but Blomkamp still seems to be finding his focus as a storyteller.
