We will never be able to assess what role, if any, race played in this tragedy. We can't because we have no way of looking into Zimmerman's head and determining if he assumed Trayvon was a criminal because of his color or for some other reason. It is also possible that he wanted Trayvon to be a criminal so that he could be a hero. Then it is less about race than it is about our whole emphasis on heros and violence and our worship of vigilante justice.
