I've never entirely bought the idea of a yawning "output gap", if only because quite a lot of the growth that took place in the pre-crisis years was just financial markets and commercial property froth. Go round the regions and you find great swathes of commercial property which is basically never going to be used again, and frankly ought to be bulldozed.
