Clary is also a problem. No doubt she develops into a capable and resourceful heroine in the five volumes so far in the book series. But she's a bit sniveling and a drag here. Too much of the action is propelled by her incompetence, whether she's screaming out loud when she should be quiet, or breaking a dish when she should be stealthy. Think a younger, cuter, more goth Mr. Smith from "Lost in Space."
