The trauma of his mother’s death runs deep. ‘Alex was starting to go off the straight and narrow,’ says Ken Way, Thomson’s long-time friend and performance psychologist, who helped Thomson during this period. ‘Alex’s father was very much a man’s man and I think it’s hard for any kid to lose the maternal influence at that age. Alex may not have admitted it, but I think that part of the journey he went on was becoming that man’s man.’
