Analysts would have you believe that America’s television landscape is one of the most competitive in the world, but while there is certainly a panoply of operators, the competition that implies does not seem to be working in viewers’ favour. All the cable companies charge sky-high prices, partly boosted by the fact that no one is breaking rank and offering cut-price deals. And partly by the fact that in certain geographic regions, people are only able to choose from a few subscribers. The “competitive landscape†is not dissimilar to the one that rail passengers face in Britain: there might be plenty of rail operators, but only one or two will be useful for any given route.
