The heather is glorious and the weather is generally warm and dry. The heath is extensive and covered with walking paths and cycle tracks. The villages are quiet and charming and most have a good gästehaus. The food is good: grills, sausages, stews, imaginative salads and excellent cured or smoked fish. Frites are up to French standards – and of course the beer is outstanding. It is easy to get to – fly into Hamburg, which is well worth a two-night stop.
