His brief to art director Joe Johnston was “They’re little furry guys, they carry spears, they run through the woods.� But after Johnston and his team produced hundreds of Ewok sketches, Lucas was unhappy. “Let’s make them cuter,� he said. Johnston took Lucas at his word. “I did one so cute, it looked like the teddy bears’ picnic,� Johnston recalled. “It had little ears and was wearing a little bonnet. George came in the next day and said, ‘That’s it! We’ll kill ‘em with cuteness!’�
