At 616bhp it’s getting near the frontiers of refinement and even the remarkable eight-speed ZF automatic slams short tempered across the ratios at times, but for the most part this is a remarkable unit in the way it delivers, not to mention it’s thirst – we got less than 10mpg. One of its nicest abilities is the ability to kick down just one ratio and then let 590lb ft of torque waft you up the road – perfectly delightful. And of course, with permanent four-wheel drive, there’s seldom an issue with grip, although we did experience some wheelspin in the wet, which is what all that torque can do when it rains.
