Pietrafesa says the model works by incorporating several current atmospheric and oceanic conditions, and then looks back throughout recorded hurricane history to find a year with similar weather conditions. Once it finds a year that's similar, it determines how many hurricanes made landfall that season and uses that to make the current forecast.
