Almut Möller of the German Council on Foreign Relations, a thinktank, said "Germany has invested so much in saving the euro because Germany benefits so much – it needs the euro for its economic model." Public confidence in Mrs Merkel's handling of the crisis makes it hard to assail her on it, Ms Möller argued.
