But the pleasures of being there, right in the thick of it, far outweigh the missed birdies. Television can never capture the physical texture of an American golf course: the high trees, speckled with colour; the undulating greens, terrifying to an amateur; or the equally scary tee-shots over windswept lakes to pocket-handkerchief greens. It cannot capture the geese flying overhead in perfect formation, while the Stars and Stripes flutters above the clubhouse. And it cannot begin to capture the atmosphere in the crowd: the partisanship; the camaraderie; the fit-to-burst sense of anticipation.
