There's the outer ear, the parts that stick out on either side of our heads and gather sound. The middle ear (where our eardrum lies) amplifies the sound, and the inner ear converts the sound to electrical signals that are transmitted into the brain. The inner ear does this using tiny, sensitive hair cells in a nautilus-like structure called the cochlea. When bent by sound, these hair cells trigger an electrical signal that gets sent to the brain. But if these hair cells are damaged, there’s no way to turn that sound into an electrical signal the brain understands.
