On my last visit my eye was caught by Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun’s Madame Perregaux, with her bobbing red feathers. Such paintings are often beautiful and always revealing, but they aren’t in the first rank of art history. Bought because the artists were masters (or mistresses) of their craft, they have not become old masters.
